The severe Cyclonic Storm Fani caused severe damage in 18 districts of Odisha on 3rd May, 2019. As a part of disaster response, AJSA regularly monitored the situation and coordinated with the volunteers and community resource persons (CRPs) since the warning was issued. After the warning of cyclone FANI from Govt. of Odisha and Metrological Department, AJSA activated its response with the help of volunteers and CRPs. The cyclone damaged almost all the kuccha houses, polythene roofed houses, tin and asbestos roofed houses in the area and made more than 60% families homeless. Families lost their household belongings (clothes, utensils, food grains etc) under the collapsed structures while children have lost their study materials and their books, notebooks, pen, and pencils.
AJSA provided emergency relief to the affected communities in terms of dry food, cooked meals, WASH kits, Shelter Kits and essential household items. Special emphasis was given on drinking water, sanitation, menstrual hygiene management and first aid kits. The primary purpose of the programme was to provide immediate relief to the affected communities and to continue our effort henceforth in the restoration and rebuilding process. Our target beneficiaries were all the affected households and individuals in 75 villages of Brahmagiri and Krushnaprasad block of Puri district. However, special attention was given to Persons with disabilities, Adolescent girls, Elders, Women and Children due to their vulnerable social circumstances. With the support of Caritas India, CAF India, Philips and WIPRO -AJSA provided food Kit, WASH Kit, shelter kits and Education Kits to 85996 families in Puri District.
